Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital offers state-of-the-art equipment to detect osteoporosis, as well as programs for the prevention and treatment of this disease.

Osteoporosis is a serious medical condition, leading to thin bones that can eventually result in fractures. These fractures are painful and increase the risk of future fractures and increasing disability. Osteoporosis affects more than 28 million Americans and causes more than 1.5 million fractures annually in the United States alone.

Osteoporosis is a "silent" disease-bone loss occurs without specific symptoms, and people may not know that they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a sudden strain, bump, or fall causes a fracture.

Recognition of risk factors and early detection can lead to a decreased risk of future bone breakage.

  Sunnyview Diagnostic Services

Early detection is important to preventing osteoporosis. Bone density is the leading predictor of a person's tendency to develop osteoporosis. Sunnyview offers the most up-to-date technology to evaluate bone density at the spine, hip and forearm. DEXA (or dual energy X-ray absorptometry) scanning, a quick and easy method for assessing bone density, is available in Sunnyview's X-Ray Department. All Sunnyview staff are certified DEXA technologists.

The test, in conjunction with a medical questionnaire, aids if evaluating overall risk for developing osteoporosis. A physician's referral is necessary to obtain a DEXA scan.

Exercise

Exercise is critical to promote good bone health. Sunnyview's Physical Therapy Department addresses prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

The first step is to have a physical therapy evaluation. This will require a referral from your doctor. Following the evaluation, your doctor may prescribe physical therapy treatment (usually covered by insurance).

Membership in Sunnyview's Lifestyle Wellness Center is available to people in the community. The Wellness Center's professional fitness instructors will design a preventive fitness program to fit your lifestyle and keep you on track. Instructors will start you on your own personalized program and teach you the proper and effective use of the exercise equipment.
