Inpatient Stroke Program
518-386-3575
The Inpatient Stroke Program offers comprehensive, individualized rehabilitation that begins with the initial stages of acute rehabilitation, through education about the disability, to re-entry into the community.
The Stroke Program is located on the neurovascular wing (2nd floor, West) which is a 30-bed unit dedicated to patients with other neurological and vascular diseases such as spinal cord injury, amputations, multiple sclerosis, and peripheral vascular disease. The floor was completely renovated in 2003/04 offering large one and two bed rooms complete with a shower in each room, a nursing station on each end, a bariatric (morbidly obese) room, an adjoining suite in the event family wants to stay close, and a therapy gym. The Stroke Program is unique in that it also accommodates young adult strokes, which are those that occur in people 59 years or age or younger.
The emphasis of the program is a comprehensive, collaborative, team effort which addresses the patient's main problems by developing an individualized plan of care that facilitates reaching the goals required to achieve the discharge plan. Lynne T. Nicolson, MD a board-certified physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrist), leads the Sunnyview Stroke Team. The rehab team formally meets once a week to discuss each patient’s progress and to ensure the discharge plan is progressing as intended. The average stroke patient’s age is about 69 years and the average length of stay is between 14-18 days.
Sunnyview encourages stroke survivors and their families to carefully and diligently choose a rehab program that fits their needs and desires. This is a very important decision and you want to make sure you do your homework. Sunnyview proudly provides a “How to” document published by the National Stroke Association explaining what to look for in a rehab institution. Sunnyview has neuropsychologists on staff who see all neurologically impaired patients. This is not true for many facilities. Sunnyview is confident that after reviewing the guidelines, you will undoubtedly choose us as the best choice for stroke rehabilitation.
