 | What
Makes Sunnyview Unique Founded in 1928, Sunnyview Rehabilitation
Hospital is northeastern New York's only freestanding rehabilitation-only facility
that serves patients of all ages. Sunnyview's patients come from all over the
Capital Region and 22 surrounding counties, as well as from other states in the
northeast. Sunnyview has four outstanding board-certified physiatrists on
staff, as well as four rheumatologists who have earned a national reputation from
their peers. Sunnyview's staff includes 172 physicians whose certified specialties
encompass primary care and internal medicine, pulmonology (lung diseases), cardiology
(diseases of the heart), neurology (brain diseases and injuries), among others. |
| Additionally, Sunnyview offers
patients and their family members the services of exceptional doctoral-level psychologists
and certified social workers to assist in coping with the special challenges that
our patients face. Many patients have experienced an accident that changed their
entire lives in the matter of seconds, and having seasoned psycho-social professionals
available to help with the issues associated with such a sudden event can mean
the difference between successful motivation for rehabilitation and failure. |
|
Sunnyview offers several
programs unique to the area. These include: - Constraint-induced therapy
following stroke
- Driving assessment and training following injury or illness
- Lifestyle Wellness Center for members of the community
- Therapeutic pool
with moveable floor to assist patients in participating in water-based exercise
programs
- StimMaster bicycle to promote exercise for spinal cord patients or
those with neurological disorders or diseases
- Massage therapy, chair yoga
and other integrative therapy approaches
- Swallowing/nutrition disorders
In
2000 and 2001, Sunnyview joined elite company when US News & World Report
named the hospital as one of the nation's best in rheumatology. Sunnyview appeared
on the same list as the Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital, and was
one of only four hospitals in New York State mentioned for rheumatology. Rheumatology
is the medical practice devoted to treating painful inflammatory diseases such
as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, osteoporosis, as well as degenerative
joint diseases, fibromyalgia, and many other disabling conditions. |

| Sunnyview's success in providing
state-of-the-art rehabilitation and returning people to their home settings is
critical to helping patients improve the quality of their lives. In fact, more
than 92 percent of all inpatients at Sunnyview return to their homes, while the
national average for similar rehabilitation hospitals runs between 82-84 percent. Here's
what Sunnyview's patients and family members have told us: [Sunnyview
staff] "taught me the right way to recover
My surgeon calls me his 'miracle
patient' because I followed his directives and those from Sunnyview staff. I am
one patient who valued the time and efforts that staff spent on me." |
 |
"I want to take the time to say thank you and to express how grateful
I am to Sunnyview and all those who work there. Your hospital is truly remarkable.
There is not one aspect of living that this hospital cannot help you with, and
that is remarkable when you look at the realm of issues you have to deal with.
It is the people and not the building that makes Sunnyview the great rehabilitation
hospital it is today. Sunnyview is like a family, and I am grateful to be a part
of that." |
|
"I was very fortunate to have been recommended for a new program at
Sunnyview. Not only did I find the program beneficial for my well-being, but it
was also an enjoyable experience. Here are my thoughts for future patients: The
staff is extremely friendly and dedicated, and they give great care and personal
attention. They encouraged me to do something to improve my pain and gave me new
hope. I felt very safe and was carefully monitored." "Sunnyview's
staff is top-notch. Their focus on us as individuals has made all the difference.
They believed in our abilities to complete this program even when it might have
been easier to give up. They're more like family members or exceptional coaches
than merely members of a hospital staff." |
